Car rental in Naples
Pointless in the historic centre, often essential for the Amalfi Coast. Here's how to think about it.
ZTL and traffic: what to know before driving in Naples
The historic centre and much of downtown Naples is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), with cameras that automatically fine unauthorised entries. On top of that, traffic is often chaotic, scooters weave in everywhere, and signage isn't always clear if you don't know the city. If your goal is to see Naples itself, skip the car: the metro, funiculars and taxis cover everything better. If your goal is the Amalfi Coast or Cilento, renting makes sense — but pick up the car outside the centre (airport or station) and don't attempt to drive it into the ZTL.
When it makes sense
For the Amalfi Coast outside peak season (in summer, traffic on that road is a problem in itself), for Cilento, or for broader road-trip itineraries across Campania. Pick-up is best arranged at the airport or station.
When it doesn't
For staying in Naples: the metro, funiculars and taxis cover everything better than a car, without the risk of ZTL fines or getting stuck in Quartieri Spagnoli traffic.
Maggio dei Monumenti and Napoli Teatro Festival
In May, dozens of historic palaces normally closed to the public open their doors; in June the Napoli Teatro Festival brings performances to theatres and courtyards across the city.

A proper pizza where the dish was born, or an evening walk along Spaccanapoli among nativity scene workshops, sfogliatelle and street life: two very different ways to feel the city.
